Picture a late-September evening on your patio. The air has turned cool, the mosquitoes have found you, and a light rain is starting to move in. On most patios, that is the end of the night. In a push-button room, it is the moment you press a button, watch the screen walls come down, and stay right where you are.
That is the idea behind Remote Spaces from Paul Construction & Awning: a patio or deck that opens to the outdoors when the weather is perfect and closes around you when it is not. Here is how these rooms work, and what to think about before you build one.
What a push-button room actually is
A push-button room starts as an outdoor space you already love, or one you are planning: a covered patio, a deck, or a new structure built off the back of your home. Paul Construction then turns it into a room you can open and close on demand.
The difference from a standard patio enclosure is control. Instead of fixed walls or screens you put up in spring and take down in fall, the walls retract into a housing when you want open air and lower when you want shelter. You choose, day by day and hour by hour.
Retractable screen walls
The heart of a push-button room is its retractable screen walls. Paul Construction installs motorized and manual systems, so you can choose how the walls operate. Lowered, they keep insects out without blocking your airflow or your view of the yard. Raised, they tuck out of sight and the space feels fully open again.
That flexibility is what makes the room useful across a Greater Philadelphia year. Spring pollen, July bugs, an October breeze with a bite to it: each one has a different answer, and the walls let you pick it.
Climate control for the colder months
Screens handle bugs and weather. Comfort in the colder months takes heat. Remote Spaces can include ductless mini-split heating and cooling, sized to the room, so you can set the temperature for the space on its own without changing the HVAC in the rest of your home.
For deep winter use, Paul Construction recommends a four-season design with full insulation. A three-season room with mini-split heat can still give you comfortable time out there on cooler winter days.
Which kind of room fits the way you live
Push-button rooms come in a few forms, and the right one depends on when you want to use the space.
- Three-season rooms give you spring, summer and fall in a protected space, away from bugs, pollen and sudden rain.
- Four-season sunrooms are fully insulated and climate-controlled, built to be used every month of the year.
- Screen rooms with climate options start with retractable screens and add mini-split comfort for the seasons you need it.
- Patio conversions take an existing covered patio or deck and add retractable walls and climate control.
If you already have a roof over your patio, you may be closer than you think. If you do not, a custom roof structure can become the frame for your new room.
How Paul Construction builds a push-button room
Every Remote Space is designed for one home. Paul Construction has been building outdoor living spaces around Greater Philadelphia since 1994, and every design is hand-drawn from scratch to fit your home’s layout.
It starts with a visit to your home
The process begins with a free in-home consultation. We look at your space, talk through how you want to use it, and check the site conditions that shape the design: sun, views, and how the room will meet the house.
Design, permits and construction, handled in-house
From there, our team draws a design that complements your home’s architecture and includes the features you want, from retractable walls to climate control. Most sunroom and patio enclosure projects need building permits, and Paul Construction handles the applications for you.
Our crews then build the room, from foundation and framing through electrical, HVAC and the finishing touches. When the work is done, we walk you through the completed space and show you how the retractable systems and climate controls work. The build is backed by our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee. Manufacturer warranties apply separately; ask us for the details on your specific model.
Ready to see what your patio could become?
If your patio sits empty for half the year, a push-button room may be the change that brings you back outside. See more about Remote Spaces, then schedule a free estimate or call 610-287-1623 and ask for Paul. We will come out, listen to what you have in mind, and sketch what your space could be.
