By late summer, most decks around Greater Philadelphia have told you what they need. A railing that gives a little when you lean on it. Boards that have faded to gray. A corner that gets so much afternoon sun nobody sits there. None of that means the deck is finished. Usually it means the deck is ready for the right upgrade.
Paul Construction & Awning has been designing and building outdoor spaces across Montgomery County, Bucks County and South Jersey since 1994. These are the deck upgrades that do the most for how your deck looks, how it works and what it adds to your home.
Start with a sound structure
Every upgrade sits on the frame underneath it, so that is where we look first. If the joists and support beams show no rot, and the deck feels solid underfoot with no sagging or bounce, it is a good candidate for improvement rather than a full rebuild.
Fasteners matter too. Rusted screws and nails can be replaced as part of the work, as long as they have not weakened the frame. Getting the structure right first means everything you add on top is built to last.
Upgrades to the deck itself
New surface boards
When the frame is sound but the boards are cracked, faded or splintered, resurfacing replaces the top layer without disturbing what is underneath. You can choose new hardwood, such as Ipe or cedar, or low-maintenance composite planks from Trex. It is the most visible change you can make, and the deck feels new again underfoot.
Railings and trim
Railings take more daily contact than any other part of a deck, and a wobbly one is a safety concern for children and guests. If the posts are solid, refacing lets you upgrade the style, material and stability of your railings and fascia at the same time as the boards.
Refinishing for wood decks
If your wood deck is in good shape but the finish has faded or peeled, refinishing may be all it needs. We sand, stain or seal the surface to protect it from weather and wear. A professional power wash first removes the mold, grime and slippery buildup that dull any deck. Our deck repair and restoration team handles every step.
Upgrades that change how you use the space
Shade when you want it
A deck in full July sun is a deck you avoid. A Sunesta retractable awning gives you shade when you want it and open sky when you don’t. Each one is fabricated to order for your space, in motorized or manual models.
A roof overhead
For permanent cover, a pergola or covered roof structure turns an open deck into an outdoor room that stands up to sun, rain and snow. Post and beam construction leaves the timber framework on view, which gives the space a warm, crafted look that fits many of the older homes in our area.
A room you can use in more seasons
If you want your deck to work in spring, fall and beyond, our Remote Spaces take the idea further. A Remote Space turns your deck or patio into a custom room you can enjoy across more of the year, designed around your home’s architecture and the way your family lives.
Features built for entertaining
A multi-level layout, lighting or an outdoor kitchen can turn a simple backyard deck into the place everyone gathers. These additions work best when they are planned together, so the finished deck reads as one design instead of a series of add-ons.
Why the design comes first
An upgrade adds the most value when it fits your home and the way you use your yard. That is why every project starts with a free in-home consultation and a hand-drawn design. We handle design, permitting and construction in-house, so the plan you approve is the deck that gets built.
Every project is backed by our Three-Point Promise, which includes our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee. Manufacturer warranties on materials apply separately; ask us for the details on your specific product.
Plan your deck upgrade
Whether your deck needs new boards, a safer railing or a whole new way to use it, the first step is a conversation on site. Take a look at our custom decks to see what is possible, then schedule a free estimate or call 610-287-1623 and ask for Paul.
